Quite A Few Important Things You Have To Take Into Account When Buying A Fish Pond

Every fish pond will need a pond pump. Pond pumps can also be used to create wonderful effects in your water garden. They can be used to animate the water in your fountain or waterfall as well as providing extra oxygen to your pond. There will be a few things you need to consider if you are in the market for a pond pump.

The flow rate needed for your size and type of pond is the first thing you will need to determine. The lowest flow rate for your pond should be half of the volume of your pond. If, for example, your pond has 1,000 gallons of water you will want a pond pump that circulates 500 gallons of water each hour. If you have lots of additional water features you may need one with a greater flow rate.

The pond pump that you select will need to move enough water to meet the requirements of your filter system and UV sterilizer. How you use your pond will also be a part of figuring out the best pond pump for you. Ponds which are small to medium in size, holding up to 800 gallons of water, will be best served by a submersible pump. They are usually fairly easy to connect to submersible filters used in this pond size.

The flow rate range for submersible pond pumps are around 250 to 4,100 gallons an hour. These pumps are placed inside the pond and are pretty inexpensive to buy. While the initial price is usually low they will usually cost more to operate than external pond pumps. Large ponds will need the flow rate that only an external pump can provide. These types of pond pumps are usually more energy efficient and can handle a large volume of water. They are also made to operate with biological filters which can put pressure on a pump. Average flow rates for these types of pond pumps are usually between 1800 to 7000 gallons per hour.
